About Oslo, Norway and Scandinavia

Oslo, the Capital of Norway, was built on the northern shores of the Oslo Fjord one thousand years ago. Oslo today has about 500,000 inhabitants.

It is a city of contrasts and multitude, with a unique atmosphere created by its beautiful natural surroundings and varied architecture..

Oslo is the commercial centre of Norway and a gateway to Scandinavian commerce and industry.

Norway is rich in natural resources, such as fish, timber, minerals, oil and natural gas. Today Norway is a leading fi sh farmer, producer of metals and alloys, and a major supplier of oil and natural gas to Continental Europe and North America. Norway is also a leading marine transporter, with one of the largest merchant navies in the world.

Norway is a winter country, where skiing has been an essential skill since the Neolithic Age. However, Norway is also the land of the midnight sun, with a mild and pleasant summer season.

As a seafaring nation, Norway is known for its adventurers and explorers, such as Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl.

Norwegian artists include dramatist Henrik Ibsen, composer Edvard Grieg and painter Edvard Munch. The Nobel Peace Prize annual award takes place in Oslo, and Norway plays a key role as mediator in many international conflicts.

The five Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark, FinlandIceland and Norway, are leading industrial players in a politically and economically stable part of the world. Many leading high-tech industries in the world market today have their origins in the Scandinavian countries.

CITY-JUMPING IN SCANDINAVIA

While in Scandinavia you may like to visit Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki or Reykjavik, or perhaps other Norwegian cities such as Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim or Tromsø. Perhaps you have a fl ight transfer in one of the other capitals of Scandinavia, and you want to spend a couple of days there before moving on? We highly recommend you to do so.
